About us

Why the name “Flyway” Ecology? Because flyways are a key aspect of many bat and bird species’ ecology, and they our are two speciality fauna groups.

Flyway Ecology was established by Lachlan McRae to deliver specialist bat and bird survey services across NSW and southern QLD. While the name reflects our core focus, we also take on projects involving a wide range of other terrestrial fauna. We’re based out of Sydney and Coffs Harbour, NSW but can travel to just about anywhere for your project’s needs.

Lachlan holds himself to rigorous professional standards and has conducted fauna surveys throughout NSW, QLD, NT, and SA. He is officially recognised as an expert for Large-eared Pied Bat (Chalinolobus dwyeri) and Eastern Cave Bat (Vespadelus troughtoni) within the NSW Biodiversity Offset Scheme. While his expertise is in bats, he also has strong understanding and experience with other mammal groups and birds.
